purpose of roof lights?
Why do 3/4 and above pickups have a row of lights on the roof, but not the 1/2 ton? What purpose do the lights serve, other than working-man's "bling"?

The lights are required for all vehicles over a certain GVWR. I'm not sure what it is but I think it's 10,000 pounds. This makes them optional on some but not all 2500 trucks, depending on GVWR. All duallys that I know of would need them.
You didn't ask but the 3 lights below the tailgate of a dually are also DOT required because of the width of the vehicle.
