This does not explain why two identical trucks, same years, same model, same cab configuration, why one has them and one does not. Only difference is one is a 4x4 and the other is a 4x2.

There is also a height requirement IIRC, along with, you could special order them as an extra. Sometimes in the past, a camper special would have them also, as this would be required due to the overall width assuming a bed camper was installed.

For some, I can see this as bling, others of us, a requirement depending upon HOW we are using the truck and trailer.

Yes, they could be ordered as an option. Say you wanted to tow a TT and be in compliance with the law. Some trucks came with them automatically if you ordered a towing pkg.

Either way there is a reason and a law that requires them! Although it is seldom if ever enforced.

I guess if that is true mine is one that didn't when I ordered it with all the trailer towing goodies in '03. Or it was not required then and who ever ordered the truck my brother just bought used special ordered them as an option cause he thought they were cool.
