Question 2 - Should wind affect a good set up truck

Interesting question #2.
I have had my trailer/truck combo for two years and never had a problem towing. (set up is in my signature)
We were towing home this weekend and although I can't determine the wind, the weather channel said gusting 40kmh (25mph).
Our drive home was pretty treacherous and I felt like I was being blown all over the road. I had to travel around 90kmh just to keep control and there were some white knuckle moments.
Should those types of winds do that for a properly set up truck and trailer. I pretty much tow the same weight, and have not adjusted my trailer/truck/hitch set up since I first set it up.

  • About all you can do is slow down in that situation. Better get home slowly than not at all.
  • I guess my thing is that I didn't think 40kph would make a big difference. I meant, it was really spooky!
  • Anyone that says they can't feel the wind either don't tow in wind or they aren't paying attention ;)
  • I drive an MDT which is rock-solid, but a big enough semi will whip the fiver and I feel it.
  • It was 4 lane. Oddly enough I didn't see any trucks, but I did have a double decker bus pass me and man...that was one of the white knuckle moments. I went about a foot into the other lane...
  • I don't know if you're on a 2 lane road, but passing semis (going the other way) can cause a huge drop/increase in air pressure.
  • Thanks for the reply DutchmanSport
No, the last two sites we have had were full hookups. So I have no water going there or coming back. That is how I know I am pretty much the same weight going there and coming home.
  • Yes! It can. Even semi trucks get blow over.

If the wind is blowing directly at the side, it can push you around pretty good. My truck is a 3500, and 99.9% of the time, it's stable as a rock. But every now and then, when the conditions are just right and gust of wind hits just right, I can feel the trailer push sideways. (I've got a duly too). My experiences are NOT white knuckle, but it is enough to remind me I have 35 feet of trailer behind me.

Every now and then, it just feeds awkward. I'll ask my wife if she can tell if the wind is blowing by looking a the tops of trees. I'm watching the road, not he tops of trees. And every times, she say, yes they are moving pretty good.

Another thing I've noticed when it's a bit windy too. If I have water in my tanks, and its windy, I can feel the trailer behind much more. It's just a different sensation. I normally do not drive with my fresh water tank full, but almost empty. But every time, I've noticed a "squirrely moment" I've had a full fresh water tank (I forgot to empty.) I'll pull over and go ahead and start draining the tank. 15-20 minutes later that tank is empty, same wind, but don't have the squirrely sensation.

Just something to think about? Do you have water in your tanks? Experiment with running completely empty vs full if you do.
