Question about welding on hitch

I have the Reese Titan hitch and am converting a motorcycle carrier to a rear deck.
I want to weld 2) 2 1/2" female tubes to the outside of my hitch so I can use 3) male support tubes to make the hitch solid.
I think if I just DC the battery on the truck I should be ok? I don't want to fry any electronics on the truck.
What do you experts think?

  • Like has already been said; if you do weld with it on the truck(I would), make sure to have a clean metal area on the hitch itself to clamp the ground to and make sure you have a good ground clamp.
  • I've been welding on trucks and equipment for over 30 years... and the answer is; don't worry about it.

Worse thing that happens is torched glove from shielding glass from an arc...
  • I welded on a grill guard attached to the front of the frame on my 2008 Dodge Ram. No problems 90,000 miles later.

I was using a Miller welder that welds with DC.
  • With pre-elctronic vehicles I always disconnected the battery but with the sensitive nature of computerized vehicles it may be better to err on the side of safety rather than regret IMO also would probably be a great time to inspect the chasis and frame as well as do some touch up work.
Good luck and looking forward to pics of your project
  • Electricity will always take the path of least resistance. Keep your ground as close to your work area as you can and you'll be fine. I've welded on many vehicles (race, rock crawlers, daily drivers...) and never even so much as thought about the battery or electronics. Is it possible to fry them? Sure. Is it likely, not very.
  • disconnecting the battery will protect the battery, which doesn't need protecting. The sensitive electronics are still connected to chassis ground, so if you are going to be putting stray voltage on the chassis, they are at risk. If you can't take the hitch off, make sure you have a super good ground for the welder, on clean metal and the cable and clamp are perfect. And hope...
