Well if it really through a rod it wold do more than rattle or knock. It would run only second before it put that rod through the side of the block or the pan.
So if you dont see any parts hanging out and oil gushing onto the garage floor, it's probably something else.
More likely it spit out a spark plug, which is common for that eng. If it did, I would repair and replace all of them .
