Fuel pump, clogged filter, sensors, etc.
The engine may still be good.
Same as my 4.6 in my 2006 explorer, pretty good motors, with proper oil changes, they can easily go way over 200k miles.
He needs to check the compression, maybe crank it by hand (deep 19 mm socket) to see if it turns.
Many possibilities.
