The fact that he said it got loud and makes me think it spit a spark plug or two. This would be easy to figure out by just looking at each plug. If they all are there then I would think a tow to a shop to have it checked out would be in order. But I agree if it threw a rod you would know right then and there.
By "it cranked but was loud and stalled after 500 feet or so" do you mean a knocking sound or exhaust noise?
