I do agree a mechanic can listen to it and usually tell very quickly what the issue is. The 5.4 can and does have many issues.
Yep but the fact that he said "it cranked but was loud and stalled after 500 feet or so" would make one think the rod went south. I have rebuilt a lot of engines and heard a lot of rod knock and misdiagnosed rod knocks.
Until he takes it somewhere or has someone look at it, he will never know what is. Even a recording is hard to tell what the noise is.
Back in the day we would take a broom handle cut down to about one and half to two feet. You put one end one different spots of the engine and the other up to your ear. Worked just like a stethoscope and would pin point where the noise/knock was coming from.
