Question on interstate driving

If the interstate has signs that state "trucks use left lane" because of construction or because of mountainous area do that include truck and camper? I've recently seen both of those signs while driving in my car and it had me wondering if that would apply to us. We'll be towing our camper through the area mentioned above in the next couple of weeks.

Thanks,

Karen

  • All great replies. I tend to move over to the inside truck lane. It's come up once or twice and i'll use that lane.
  • Sometimes the signs are put up because of lane widths, lane weight bearing ability, exiting and entering traffic, lack of enough shoulder room or any shoulder room, or God only knows what. Since you are NOT a truck, you are not bound to comply with the posted restrictions unless they appear beneficial for you to use. Just be sure to read the signs closely as some will specify a weight, width, or other restriction that may apply to your rig. Generally the LEOS will cut you slack even on these restrictions, but you can always meet the PITA who won't. Watch the solid white line between lanes as that part applies to all vehicles.
  • If construction takes the freeway down to 2 lanes I will pick the lane that I think is the widest...if needed I will take up part of both lanes if they are each not wide enough...I'd rather take up both lanes if needed than worry about the traffic behind me...they can live with the short time it takes me to get through the construction
  • I agree with 2chiefs in most cases through construction areas the right lane is the berm lane or temporary constructed lane not meant to carry the heavy truck traffic…

In none construction areas it could be any number of reasons… I would guess it would be prudent even if not required to use the lane designated for oversized vehicles…
  • I don't think you need to worry about that for smaller RVs, but whatever your comfortable with is the way to go.
  • I do not consider my setup a "truck" on the highway signs. I do consider my setup as a "vehicle pulling a trailer".
  • Left lane. They want the bigger, heavier vehicles away from exits and mergers.
  • Many times they want the Trucks in the Left Lane during construction because they have converted the shoulder section into a lane and shoulder sections were not intended to carry the weight of the tractor trailers.
  • If your question is "what does the law require" then I guess the answer would be probably not required to use the "truck" lane. Common sense says it's probably the better choice given the condition of the road.
  • When I have seen that sign, there has been no shoulder on the right, due to mountain, equipment or barriers. I used the left lane because I didn't want to lose a mirror!
