Questions to new Ford truck owners

OK the new 6.7 has been out long enough to ask if there have been any problems with the later year ones such as the 2013. Also how are you folks with the 6.7 finding the stock exhaust brake working out. I use to have an exhaust brake on my Motor Home and then on my 2006 Dodge Ram, also had one on my 1999 F450 truck so know how well they work on those rigs and would like to compare it to the newer Fords. I already know that the Dodge and GM ones work fine so I don't need to be told how good they are.

I'm a pickup slide in camper guy and want to trade trucks and all of my equipment off my present truck will fit right onto a new Ford truck so this is about $3000 of equipment that could be put on the new truck and save me some money there. It would be a F350 dually CC if I get a new one.
  • I have had my 2012 F350 6.7 for a little over a year. Great truck and no problems. Towed 35' 5er over Colorado passes. Pulled them with no problems and exhaust brake made going down easy as can be. Minimal braking needed.
  • As one poster already said, it's to early to tell if some major problems were fixed on the 2013 6.7 diesel.

Here is a TSB that tells me Ford is still having valve problems with the 2013 6.7's. Clicky

Here are some of the early problems they had with the engine.

    Turbo problems.

    More turbo problems.

    And more turbo problems.

    HPFP problems.

    More 12K HPFP problems

    Blown engines.

    More blown engines.

    Radiator leaking.

    More leaking radiators.

These are the common problems. Are they fixed for 2013? Who knows? The TSB shows including 2013 valve problems so that goes to this year.
  • Well, we have a 2011 diesel with the Tow Haul Mode brakes. It is not a true exhause brake but it does do an excellent job. We tow a fifth wheel and the tow haul mode brakes work great down long steep grades. It's activated by pressing on the brake and each time you activate the brakes after, it slows you down even more. We haven't had any problems and occassionally use it for a commuter vehicle, we like the ride so much.
  • 2013 problems?

I'd think it is too early to tell if a 2013 anything is going to have problems.
  • I have heard of no problems with the 6.7. You hear sporadic reports of high pressure fuel pump problems but I haven't heard of any recently. And I think all three model trucks use the same HPFP systems made by Bosch.

The exhaust brake works great for me, we used it all the time coming down those western mountains. I occasionally had to apply the brake to slow down below 55 mph on long steep grades but when I let up on the brake the exhaust brake would kick in again and take it the rest of the way down.

I did have one problem with the truck, a cracked battery. The dealer replaced it and the straps.
