This is the first I heard of and was very surprised at the Hemi rpms drop way down and the engine seamed to bog down during that 1st to 2nd shift. Does this happen when running at WOT or does it happen at partial throttle?
Perhaps the tranny engineers need to rethink the gear spacing since a 6 speed should have very small incremental gear changes.
Again... Enjoyed the videos and the tests by both members... Good job! :B
3.23 to 1.84 is a big jump, looked like around a 2000 RPM drop when it shifted so no wonder it bogged a bit. 1st is a low, get it moving gear and 2nd on up are the normal driving ratios. Probably better suited to the diesels bigger, fatter low RPM torque curve as well. These 6 speeds are really 4 speeds with double overdrives so their ratios aren't that close and these trucks aren't set up for WOT 0-60 runs. You will never see OD on a WOT 0-60 run in any vehicle and the hemi never even got out of second.
You would think by having the luxury of 6 gears the engineers would have the ratios more evenly spaced so there are more options to select the right ratio for a given speed, throttle position and load. But like you said the gears may have been selected for the Cummins power band.
The gearing on my Ford seams to be similar to Chryslers setup in the 1st to 2nd gears.
