Ram SRW

Simple fact is that OP's choice of trailer is beyond the RAM SRW CC 4x4 3500 ratings of 17050 for short box and 16860 for long box.

These type of threads have a common, unspoken theme that inevitably seems to lead to a lot of conjecture. It's very hard to offer sound advice or make a sound decision without accurate data.

On the truck side of the house, we always seem to have more than enough accurate payload, axle, and tow data. On the trailer side, the vast majority of the time we only have the manufacturer's "empty" weight data---notorious for being inaccurate . . . low-ball numbers based on a unit with zero options---a guess-estimate. If I was getting ready to spend a ton of my hard-earned money on a truck for my TT, I would try hard to dig up some accurate, realworld numbers about my TT to help my cause.

If the OP elects to base his decision on guess-estimates, he may want to consider erring on the side of caution and purchasing a DRW. If he decides to throw caution to the wind, yes, there's a chance he might be ok with a 3500 SRW . . . then again, maybe not. There's always the possibility he may need to make a very hasty airbag purchase for his 3500 SRW right after his first tow. His sag would be looking good, but his numbers . . . maybe not so good.

15 minutes at a CAT scale could easily save the OP 15 percent, or more, in time, money, and frustration.

I've never had mine push my SRW but also in the same breath I tow to my surroundings. People that swear by having a DRW truck only for towing heavy always put out that the SRW people don't know what they are doing or are clueless. I admit, there are a lot of people out there that are clueless and a lot of them shouldn't be pulling a pop up with a class 8. If one wants to hook to a heavy trailer and not want to pay attention to their surroundings then yes they need the heaviest truck they can by but for people that pull occasional weekends and vacations then a lot of times you can do it with a SRW truck and do it safely.

The max F350 SRW is actually rated to 7280 and max GVWR is 11,500. My truck has LT275/70R18E rated to 3640 each? Is that how Ford came up with 7280?

The question of what it can tow can only be answered after one knows what the rear axle weighs ready to tow, and subtracts that from RGAWR. Which looks like is in error at 7280.

In my case my rear axle is 3760 ready to tow. So 7000-3760=3240 for pin weight. I choose a trailer that had a lighter 2450 dry pin weight, I am not going to install a generator or washer/dry. Chris

No Exceeding the payload rating makes it the wrong truck.
Why buy a truck for towing a large 5'er that is not adequate from the start? There are trucks with adequate payload readily available.
If you want a SRW no problem just get a lighter trailer, however if you want a big trailer you need a big truck.
The guys that want a big trailer but still want to maintain a little truck are generally ignoring some parameter to justify there decision.
Somehow there is safety in numbers because some other guy on the internet also has the wrong truck and is happy.

The SRW F350 RGAWR is 7230 lbs.

Put a washer and dryer in and load it up it will exceed the Ford RGAWR depending on hitch choice and things in the truck bed. No way could one tow the average 21K 5th wheel without putting the SRW F350 over it's RGAWR. So what good is the high number?

For that much weight, it is a dually.

The 3.42 axle will tow it in 5th gear, with downshifts to 4th.
The 4.10 axle will tow it in 6th gear, with downshifts to 5th.

The SRW will be very close to maximum rear axle capacity and trailer tow rating. Do you want that?

The DRW will have extra capacity.

Don't forget to adjust the weight ratings for options (ratings are for a stripped truck), people, FW hitch, and anything that goes in the truck.

Measure twice, buy once.
