rear airbag ride quality

I love the way my 2018 Ram 2500 Laramie rides with the rear coils compared to how my 2012 road on leaf springs. Will adding aftermarket airbags diminish the ride quality when empty? From the research I've done, it seems that leaving about 5 psi in the bags when running empty is the norm. Some say it makes the ride worse, some say they cant tell. What is your guy's experience?
  • You might give some thought to Timbrens. I have a set on my truck and like them a lot. I installed them without the spacers so there’s a bit of a gap and I don’t notice any difference in ride quality unloaded. Loaded up with the FW and gear it settles down on them lightly and I think it improves the ride. Biggest thing I notice is it handles bumps at speed better. They’re only a couple hundred bucks from etrailer and take about 15 minutes to install.

FWIW I agree that the coils give a really nice ride and handling balance for a HD truck. Don’t worry about any keyboard warriors you may encounter. People get all frothed up here all the time about the topic but it really makes no difference in the real world.

Probably the most ignorant comment I've heard in awhile. If I wanted a 3500 I would have bought it. If I spent 70k dollars on a truck I don't think the 900 dollars more for a one ton would not have been a deal breaker. I bought a 3/4 ton because I wanted the rear coil springs because of the improved ride quality. Keyboard warriors like you that don't answer the question asked offer NOTHING of value to this forum.

WOW, a little testy??? "Ignorant" that's a fine comment. My comment was NOT directed at YOU since YOU already did what many do. It was to HELP others not make the same mistake.

But hey thanks for the other comment "keyboard warrior". I will add it to my collection.
  • My new Ram with coils rides better towing, and empty, than any truck I've ever owned.

    That's a good one I haven't heard before. :-)

  • It's a trade off. You do get a little stiffer ride, but when you need them they are very nice.
  • It definitely seems hit or miss on the ride quality. I will keep researching.
  • I had a set on our old Tundra and they definitely affected the ride loaded and empty. With the tt in tow and 20psi they were great and worked as advertised. Unloaded with the minimum 5psi the ride was stiff and harsh.

These were the Airlift style with leaf spring suspension. The rubber is thick and is a constant connection to the frame and axle so it will affect the ride quality. Mine were the single bellow bags. I have read that the effect is less with the double bellows style.

I'm not sure what the style is for our Rams with the coil springs. A co-worker has Airlift bags on his Ram 1500 that sit inside the coils with no attachment. They are much thinner material than the rubber and don't seem to have any affect on his ride. I don't see the same style for the 2500.
