Recall on 37,000 2015 Ford F-150 trucks.

Not a huge number of affected vehicles compared to some other recent recalls, but probably something owners will want to get fixed promptly. Could be unpleasant in heavy traffic.

Ford recalls F-150's that could slam on the brakes

Ford (F) has recalled 37,000 of the best-selling trucks for the problem, which happens when its automatic braking system incorrectly senses that there's another vehicle in its lane.

The problem will only occur when an F-150 is in what's called "adaptive cruise control" mode, which will apply the brakes if it detects an obstacle. Ford said the problem can occur when the pickup passes a large, highly reflective truck. The radar can be fooled into thinking that large truck is in the F-150's lane and then hit the brakes. The collision-warning system would also activate, flashing red lights and sounding an alarm in the F-150's cab.

  • Love my old 2000 Town Car.

Maybe it's just me...but if I come to a situation where I have to have adaptive cruise I turn off cruise and handle the speed adaption myself.

It was bad enough that the back up sensors on my wife's former Kia Sorento would go off from fog...highly annoying.

Back up camera is great though.

New van has back up camera and no stupid back up sensors.

Glad Ford is addressing this issue though.

    Thanks!

  • Just great. Driving on snow and ice on a two lane highway and the vehicle slams on its brakes because it thinks it is smarter than the driver. What brilliant engineer thought up that idea? Saw one of the compact cars actually takes control and switches lanes. Bad enough I have to watch out for crazy drivers. Now I have to watch out for robots trying to ram into me.

    I agree 100%!
Maybe a loud alarm would be better! I have been wondering when these too sophisticated of systems would be the cause of a wreck, not the prevention.

Can't imagane going down a clear road have a shinny tanker pass you and all of a sudden the brakes are slaked on!

Once you've tried adaptive cruise control you won't want to go back to a standard cruise control.
  • The automated stuff in cars still worries me. We have a 2013 with the lane departure and collision avoidance **** in it which I always turn off. The collision avoidance doesn't hit the brakes for you but it will kick off the cruise control and you get noise and flashing lights. Unfortunately, it will alarm sometimes with nothing around and could result in distraction to the point of an accident in my opinion. With the lane departure stuff the never ending road construction around here confuses it on occasion, again, no foul except the lights and noise, but I hate to think what it would do if it was driving itself.
  • Well, such is life when integrating new tech. Engineers can't account for every single possibility out on the road. I wonder, with adaptive cruise, do Lamborghinis show up like stealth bombers? Basically undetectable or a tiny pebble? I mean with all those edges and facets LOL. But then again, I don't think they use so much radar absorbent material either.

  • Interesting! So if you are passing a large truck, and the truck suddenly looses power and applies the brakes, it sort of leaves you out in the passing lane and slowing down?

Cars are getting way to sophisticated!
