Reliability ford f250 6.7 with alot of mileage

I'm thinking I'm going with gas. This will be for a tt 8700 lbs family of 6. But thinking into the future I'd like a golf cart on the back. So toying around with the thought of diesel. I have just heard how expensive the fix is if when they break down. Anyone have a reliable 6.7 with 150k plus miles that nothing big has happened? Is it common to get 150-200k out of the 6.7 before major problems start? I'd be happy to hear any stories of suggestions

Thanks guys! Such a hard decision. About 110 a month different on the payment for the xl diesel vs gas. I really don't know what to do. I do know both prices are going up at the pump

WOW ! IMHO, not worth that premium for diesel !

  • I have a '12 6.7PSD with 145k miles. To date I've had the Nox sensor and the EGT sensors on the exhaust replaced all after the warranty period.

Both the 6.2 and the 6.7PSD are really good engines. A hotshotter at FTE got a little over 400k miles on his 6.2 when his cams failed, and still has the original transmission, and we're seeing some hotshotters with the 6.7PSD with 300k-400k miles still with the original DPF. Radiators and DEF heaters('11-'13) are the biggest problem with these.
  • With that weight a 3/4 ton gas would be fine. Your payload is higher on a gas engine due to the weight savings of the diesel. I think for that weight a 1 ton is way over kill. Most 3/4 ton gas jobs have the payload to handle that. Some diesels may as well if you go that route. The 6.7 seems to be a great engine and if you are looking at the Ford gas the 6.2 Boss engine has been just as good. Truth is most modern gas power plants last a lot longer then years back. They are built to perform the work for a long duration...and yes if the diesel breaks it ain't cheap.......
  • The 6.7's appear to be quite reliable, especially newer ones. The only major issues that I have heard about are issues with the fuel pump. Do your research there.

I hope you realize that a diesel engine cuts into your available payload, thus allowing you to carry less weight. If you want to haul a golfcart in the bed, you might consider a gas engine for the increased payload, otherwise consider a dually diesel.
  • I would ensure there is full maintenance history. Other than that I wouldn't blink at 150K for a modern diesel or a gas truck.
  • 150K miles for a diesel is just getting broken in. Mine only has 100K with only minor problems so far. And I've heard only minor problems being reported by other owners. There was a spate of fuel system problem reports a couple years ago but It was never clear to me just how common those were. A few very PO'd owners can make a lot of noise. And I have seen no reports like that for quite awhile now. No doubt those were expensive fixes but other than that the trucks are quite reliable.

Of course any complex manufactured product with have occasional lemons off the manufacturing line.

However, I could be wrong here, but I thought the extra weight of the diesel engine reduced the truck's carry capacity. Which is based on the suspension after all. And if you are worried about carrying something heavy in the truck bed then payload is what you need to be concerned with. You would be better off getting a one ton rather than the 3/4 you are looking at.
