When I was training my daughter to drive we were doing a local freeway section. I pulled up alongside a piece of roadside tire debris, and asked my daughter outside to look at it. I said pick it up, and of course, a good size chuck, it was about 80 pounds and she couldn't.
I then said imagine what that would do coming through your windshield. She shuddered, and learned a valuable lesson.
Now, when I see one coming up to pass me, I examine the tires in my wing mirror if I am able. I had one go by, and the tire was just flopping on the trailer, saw him pulled over about two miles ahead. As soon as they pass, I slow down to give them what they need to stay well ahead of me, and then try to follow at about the same speed as they are running, but between the crowds.
