How old were your old tires? Were they over 5 years old? Sounds like they aged out.
Read the OPs statement. "A year and a half ago I bought new tires...."
They blew out be use they're light duty GY Marathons. Quite possibly the worst trailer tires out there somehow.
In a lot of years, a ton of miles and many different trailers, Marathons have consistently been the worst tires I and many others have seen. Let me guess, they delaminated and the tread peeled off?
Few years ago, had 2 tandem axle boat trailers. Older trailer lost 3 Marathins in one short trip to the lake. Maybe they were "too old", but one was coming apart sitting on the spare rack!
Same trailer with some newer Marathins, maybe 3 years old tops, stored indoors year round and another new boat/trailer 3 years old, super low miles on trailer. Both trailers managed to spit out another 3 tires in the same week. All delams. Wrecked more fenders than they cost!
Similar boat/trailer, buddy's family loses one on their way to pick us up. Hour later, we smoke another Marathin. Strap an axle up limp to next town on 3 tires. First tire store is a Goodyear shop. They didn't even sell Marathins! Said they wouldn't carry them they were so bad.
Sorry, not exaggerating any of this.
I've run cheap China bomb tires overloaded to Alaska and not popped a tire, but if I even get near a Marathon it comes apart! Lol.
