Rubber roof damage

I have a 2008 Rockwood 8314SS travel trailer. I keep it stored in a metal building that is open on one side. My dealer was inspecting the roof and found small cuts and holes in the rubber roofing along the edges of the roof on both sides. Most of the holes are either curved or V shaped and are between 1/4 and 1/2 inch long. Last summer I worked on the roof replacing the lap sealant and I'm quite certain the holes were not there then. I can not imagine what could have caused this kind of damage unless it was done by some rodent or bird or other small animal. Does anyone have any idea what this could be?
  • The only marks on my roof was done by the dealer's jack-booted thug when he installed a vent cover on my new trailer.

I have heard of lack of support near the roof edges causing problems. Press down at the holes and see if the plywood didn't cover completely.

My bet is that birds are the culprit. Some woodpeckers, and other breeds, drum as a mating call.
  • Yes, although I did not read any info that it was along the rear or that the dealer wore boots.
  • NMDriver, are you suggesting this is the mechanics fault? You think he walked along the rear edges of the roof and his boots cut the rubber membrane?
  • The dealer wore cleats or bottle cap taps while "inspecting" the roof. Yes I distrust dealers and mechanics who find problems that were not there before.
  • From the shape of the damage, it sounds like something rubbed hard against it - although the bird theory is compelling. If you cold prove that you could get ins. to cover it.
Otherwise, I would just cover it with Eternabond.
  • If there are crows or vultures in your area, they could be the culprits.
They both love rubber and go after windshield wipers and rubber moldings.

  • The rubber roof membrane will crack with age where it folds down at the edge of the roof. I used eternabond tape to repair the cracks and prevent water intrusion when this happened on my 5th wheel.
  • Any of us would need a lot more information, and pictures, in order to try and guess what may have caused your issues.

What type of roof? Rubber, TPO, etc.

What climate? Has the roof been subjected to extreme heat and cold? Vinyl flooring has been known to shrink and crack in extreme cold weather. Maybe tired roofing material can do the same. It is 10 years old. That's a lot of sun, wind, water, maybe freezing.

What kinds of wildlife may be around? Squirrels and Chipmunks are known to dig and scratch, trying to find a way in.

When you replaced the lap sealant, did you maybe use any cleaning chemicals that may have damaged the roofing materials?

Pictures would really help in getting suggestions for repair.
