I don't think it is about "cutting off your nose to spite your face". Maybe it's about finding a solution to a problem. If you are lucky enough to have a small space to cool, such as a bedroom that can be closed off or a living area, the use of a smaller more efficient window unit or highwall unit would do best.
In extremely hot situations, you would be happy to fall asleep with the air on and later in the wee hours or early morning open things back up.
