Running the fridge on 12 Volts?

Any assistance would be appreciated. Have a 2013 Passport 3180RE. The dealer says the fridge will only run on Propane or A/C, but the control panel on the fridge HAS a 12V indicator (doesn't illuninate/not hooked up?). Anyone aware of a way to make it work on just 12V? We are NOT comfortable running it on propane while driving down the road, so we have a couple of higher end coolers that we use.
  • Been running my refers on gas when trqveling since about 1980 with no issues. It is very common and safe way to do it. If your uncomfortable, simply turn it off. It should stay cold, for several hours, maybe not all day, but a couple of hours for sure.
  • It's got a "7 cubic foot Atwood Gas/Electric Refrigerator" I'll get you the model # when I get home this afternoon.
  • 3 Way fridges (gas/120v/12v) are not common anymore, most are 2-way (gas/120v). The frisge does need 12v when running on gas to power the circuit board and igniter, so that may just be an indicator light to let you know it's connected to 12v. Can you provide the make/model of the fridge?

Other option is to use an inverter and power it from 120v using the batteries...it will drain the batteries fairly quickly (within a day) because the heating element is a resistance unit like a toaster, and in hot weather will stay on a lot. i wouldn't consider this option unless you have at least two batteries installed.
  • Don't know about your particular model frig....but.
Many, most of us run our frig on propane while driving. They are designed to do so and work great.

You can always shut it down when fueling.
