Sales tax, tag, and registration?

I'm thinking of buying a TC from a dealership in GA; I live in TN. From what I could find out sales tax is .07 in TN plus about $81 fees for rv's over $1600. You have to pay the tax to register and title in your state? Do you have to pay a renewal fee every year even though a TC doesn't need a Tag? I guess some people don't register or title their TC? Is that even legal and acceptable? What if the bank has the lean on it,they will need a title right? I guess the insurance Co just needs the vin. I know tc' s are somewhat different animal.
  • Is it irrelevant that some people buy their TC in a tax free state but then take it home to a taxed state and end up paying the tax there? Well what if you never register and title it, won't you have problems later if you ever want to sell or transfer it? I suppose if you plan on keeping it forever your self, having a title may not be so important.
  • Well, I know (about the core question) but I'm not saying. I don't want to appear dishonest.

Lets just say I never paid tax on my Lance or my Palomino but the Lance was insured and so is the Palomino and the Lance had a note on it (at one time) and the Palomino has a note on it until January.

My philosophy is, I pay more than enough taxes as it is. If I can circumvent paying more, I will. If bureaucrats weren't so wasteful with tax money, it wouldn't be an issue paying more taxes but as it is, they are and I'm not, if I can help it.
  • The correct place to ask is the state where you want the vehicle registered.
Don't relay on dealers. I did this year when I bought new truck in California to register it in Nevada.
The salesman assured me he can register Nevada truck and gave me temporarily plates.
Waiting few weeks I went to NV DMV myself and paid the fees there.
A month later I've got package from the dealer with .... California plates for Nevada truck.
CA DMV gladly took my $700 for double registration. No refund.
  • I know nothing, or next to nothing, on the core question here but I did buy my current RV from an out of State dealer. I didn't register it in the State where I bought it and didn't pay any of their sales taxes. I did pay sales tax in my home State when I registered it here.

As for the loan and title, I know in my home State the title is held by the lender until the loan is paid off. I do know that's not true for all States. And in my case the lending bank is actually in a State which isn't my home State or the State I bought the RV in.

I also know that in some cases the State doesn't automatically issue a title for some items normally titled. I have a small trailer that I bought out of State and when I registered it in my home State they just collected the taxes and told me they wouldn't issue a new title unless I requested one. So the original manufactures title of origin is all I have on that trailer.

What I do know for sure though is if I was in this situation I'd talk to the dealer and find out what procedures they have to follow for out of State sales, and I'd talk to my local tax office where I intended registering the vehicle. I'd also talk to my lender about their title requirements.
  • Have you visited your local Tennessee Department of Motor Vehicles or the equivalent?
