I wonder what cab configuration he is refering to, Reg./ext./quad./crew/mega.
A partial quote from webslave's post: Quote: One thing that the long bed advocates don't mention is that the payload for a long is usually a hundred or better pounds lighter than the short bed. That extra weight of the 1' 6" of steel has to come off the load.

I've always thought it was the other way around????????? Guess I just don't get out often enough anymore. - 45RicochetExplorer

I got a chuckle also. Guess my dually has the lightest payload of all of them since it weights more :B - VulcaneerExplorer

When it comes to towing the LWB will tow 100X better then a SWB truck. Not an opinion a fact.
100 times better? Really? That is a fact? 100 times better? What if it's a dually? Must be 1000 times better. Then if it's a diesel add another 1000 times better. Are those facts too?
So if you have a LWB dually diesel, you probably don't even need to drive it. Just drop the truck and trailer into the FAX machine and punch in the number. Just be sure to get into the truck before you hit the enter key. You'll be at your destination at the speed of light.
Of course maybe if those facts are not really accurate, maybe that won't really work.
Thanks for the humor.:) - The_Mad_NorskyExplorerA partial quote from webslave's post: Quote: One thing that the long bed advocates don't mention is that the payload for a long is usually a hundred or better pounds lighter than the short bed. 6.5' bed will be fine ..add a slider hitch ..a whole lot cheaper
Didn't price out Ford or the GM twins but in the Ram, there is only a $200 difference between a 8' long bed truck and a 6.5' short bed truck. How much is a slider fifth wheel hitch compared to a non slider?

Don - webslaveExplorerI've owned both. I'm just the opposite as most. I'll stay with my shortbed that I currently own. The wife will drive it if she has to; she flat out refuses to drive a long bed. It will, in a pinch, fit into a regular parking space. It fits in my garage. It can haul 8' lumber, etc., with the tailgate down (that's what they make bed extenders and load straps for). It turns sharper. I don't need the extra space for a fuel tank as my short bed comes with the same tank as the long bed (34 gallon) and that is quite sufficient for the way we tow. Don't need the bed space for carrying things; if it doesn't fit in the 5er or the pull shelf on the back (Cougar 318SAB), it doesn't go. Don't need a slider; with the extended pin on the TrailAir Tri-Glide pinbox and the sculpted nose, I can get 90 degrees if I would ever have to and I've never needed to. One thing that the long bed advocates don't mention is that the payload for a long is usually a hundred or better pounds lighter than the short bed. That extra weight of the 1' 6" of steel has to come off the load.
So...either will work. If you need the bed space, than go for the 8' bed. If you don't need the 8' bed for space or bragging rights, then get the more maneuverable short bed (6' 6" or 5"). Except for when we are traveling, the truck has never been a grocery getter...I have a car that gets much better gas mileage for getting groceries. :C - john_betExplorer II

I did not see where anyone talked about the relationship between wheel base, short/long bed and cab size. Wheel base dictates maneuverability, garage space. Several different cab/bed combo's use same wheel base. JMHO.
Careful John, you are trying to be logical here. - Cummins12V98Explorer III

I'd buy a 10' bed if they made them.
They do make longer beds and I agree, once you need a dually you might as well go long.
Might be me but that bed does not look very long. - 4x4ordExplorer III

- gclossExplorerI don't pull a 5th wheel, but I just went from a short bed to an 8' bed and wow what a difference when going camping. So much more room for gear.
