Scamp Owners?

Are there any Scamp owners out there? If so I would like your input on "wish I had" or sorry "I did it" options. We are getting ready to order a 16' standard, lay out 6 and want to make sure we get what is needed but do not waste money on options that do not get used.
It is a big step down from our 34' HR but then we never thought we would buy another RV. This trailer will be perfect for our annual jaunt to visit the Moms. Hotels and motels really suck!
thanks,
Randy

  • I don't have one but I have been seeing one for weeks now at a state park we camp out along the Colorado river here in Arizona. It is the little 13' model.

I mention it because the couple, and their dogs, are Snowbirds wintering here from Alberta Canada. That's right, they are spending MONTHS down here in that little trailer. Granted, they do pull it with a minivan, which I am sure they use to carry the majority of their "stuff," but still it intrigued me.

So I asked them about it and they said they downsized due to realizing they just didn't need most of their "stuff" when they are down here for the winter.

Their campsite is robust, despite the little egg. They have a small dog fence (maybe 18" high) around their "yard" and of course the usual assortment of chairs, table, and BBQ.

They also said they feel they are not wasting all the fuel they used to use and have sense of freedom they didn't feel before. It's still hard for me to believe they live in that little egg, with their two little dogs, for months. Granted, this is Arizona so they are outside much of the time.

It kind of makes me want one just to hook up and go--without having to worry about equalizing hitch, mirror extensions, and the loss of gas milage.

  • I had a 2005 16 ft Scamp a couple of years ago. It was a nice really easy to tow unit, however, with the rounded corners a lot of interior space is compromised. Also the interior is covered with a furry surfaced insulating material (known affectionately as "rat fur"). The combination of the rounded shape and furry walls, to me, gave it a cave like feeling. The fiberglass people are a loyal group and really love their little "eggs", and the unit appears to be very well built - Just wasn't my "cup of tea".

Ive had several small campers over the years that you can see at My Campers

PS: Some think because its a fiberglass shell it won't leak. Well there are still roof penetrations and mine leaked at the "Fantastic Fan". I removed the rivets and replaced everything with stainless steel bolts, nuts and butyl calking - That worked.

    Randy,

I bought a scamp 16 with layout 6. I liked that it was easy to tow. And no matter where I parked, it drew a lot of attention from others interested in that size of a trailer.

But inside, it was pretty small and wasn't big enough for my wife and I, so we sold it.

  • I had the Casita which is similar to the scamp Really liked the simplicity of the trailer Easy to two etc but did find the 16ft got small quick. I had ac and by pass for the water heater which helped when you winterize for the winter The people I met with Scamps said the same as the Casita people, well build and they hold their value. I did miss not having a screen door. I am now getting ready to by a 19 ft escape which will still give the same advantages of the casita but more space
  • I've already joined the egg forums but figured there might be an owner or two running around here.
