Seeking input on engine code...

Question

I posted here, yesterday, about an intermittent engine light I've gotten on a few longer hauls. Thanks to the input of the respondents, I stopped by Auto Zone this morning to get the code read ( what a great service - took 3 minutes and didn't cost a dime).

The code is PO300 - he says it is a 'random misfire detected.' It only appears when I am towing long distances, and it usually goes away shortly thereafter. Any thoughts?

I'd start with a new set of plugs and plug wires. If that doesn't solve the problem, before I threw any more parts at it I guess a trip to your local mechanic for a deeper diagnosis may be in order. Good luck.

Last year I also had "misfire" codes.  What I found to be helpful was a search on google and found several articles that got me going in right direction. One of the suggested issues is a bad battery.  Since it is only happening when I tow, it makes me wonder if the extra load of being connected to the trailer is causing too much draw on a weak battery and creating the problem.  May or may not be it - but it's a cheap check!

Random misfire is almost always deferred maintenance on plugs and/or wires. It happens when towing because the engine bay becomes much hotter, which increases electric resistance.

Now if the "random" misfire actually isn't random, and happens during repeatable situations like hill climbs, then you may have to look into the fuel system too.
