Sequoia door-jamb sticker

Thanks to Westend for alerting me to the picture-posting help thread on RV.net.

This is the sticker on the door-jamb of the Sequoia. I"m sorry it's sideways, but I'm not seeing a rotate option here. Someone said I was refusing to post it - not so. I just didn't know how. Now I do.

TV weight is 67xx#.
Dry weight of the TT is 5100#.
Loaded for a short trip, TT came to 5500#.
Tongue weight was 740#, or just under 13% of the loaded weight.
Our Sequoia has the tow package.

Actually, they are not very similar...however I will say that they should be. 2010 was the Sequoia redesign before Toyota adopted the new SAE standards for tow capacity. I am not at home (I can look at the manual when I return home later this week) but recall our 2010 Sequoia Ltd 8 passenger with 20" wheels was rated for a max tow of 9100 lbs. However, if you noticed, the following year with no major updates to the Sequoia but with the new SAE standards, the tow capacity dropped by about 2000 lbs.

Here is a picture from my 2010 Sequoia Ltd 4x4, 8 passenger with 20" wheels and power seats passenger/driver:

Would I consider towing 9100 lbs with our Sequoia?

    Not a chance!
  • We got the TV weight by subtracting the TT weight from the total weight.

According to the owner's manual, with the tow package, we can tow 9xxx# - I think it's 9500 or 9600.

We have 18" wheels and a power passenger seat.

It's unlikely that we will drive with other people in the car, and we probably won't travel with more than a few pounds of canned food, since we don't use them much.
  • You should be able to find that information in your owners manual. I also think you're within your limits HOWEVER if I recall correctly from when I was shopping for a TV there are a few other things you should consider. According to Toyota:

    1) 20" wheels will decrease your towing capacity by 500 lbs. over 18" wheels

    2) the powered seat option (in seats other than the driver's) decreases your capacity by another 500 lbs.

Since you have the Limited model there is a good chance you have one or both options on your Sequoia. In any case, I'd start by taking your Sequoia to a scale and get an accurate weight.

Payload is the "weak link" in what is otherwise a fine tow vehicle. Our TT is around 6,000 lbs loaded for a trip. Between the tongue weight and our kids (when they were still traveling with us) we were right on the GVWR.

I think you have your numbers wrong on the TV weight. Where are you getting 6700 lb????

That makes no sense, with a GVWR of 7300 lb - TV of 6700 lb, you could not even put 4 good-sized people in that Sequoia.

I looked up the Sequoia 2015 brochure. This is what it says (numbers change a little with 4WD)

    curb wt = 5730
    GVWR = 7100

This leaves 1370 for cargo, including people. Subtract the trailer tongue wt leaves 630 lb for cargo in the Sequoia, including people. I can assure you that there is a large margin in that number.

GCWR (gross combined weight rating) is 13,600. With the Sequoia fully loaded plus trailer, you are at 7100 + 5500 = 12600

Towing capacity of the Sequoia is 7400 lb, you are well below that.

So you are well within the limits in the brochure, and again I can assure you that there are generous margins in those numbers. You will be fine with a good weight-distributing/sway control hitch like the Equalizer.

THIS IS THE BROCHURE I FOUND.

If you have a different year, just google "20xx Sequoia weights and capacities" and you will find the right info.

I just saw that you have a 2010, so check for info on it. I expect the numbers will be very similar.

Instead of using the WWW link, you should use the postcard looking icon to the right (looks like a yellow postcard with a stamp and mountain on it) to make a picture link.

It will look like this when you add 520 height and 640 wide.

    Good luck with the truck!

    Fred.
