Short trip to St Georges Island SP, Fla

Just returned from a short trip to St Georges Island State Park near Apalachicola, Fla. Been there a few times before, I think it has always been in the spring. Saw several truck campers in the campground (lance, bigfoot, palomino, arctic fox. Mosquitos were much less than previous trips. Sea trout were biting just about anything thrown their way. Fried oysters were great as usual. Weather was kinda of crummy, but acceptable. Next time we go, I think I will leave the boat at home and try some surf fishing, it looked like a whole lot less work.

  • We have camped at Ochlockonee SP and we took our canoe with us. I highly reccommend floating the Ochlockonee. We did it in December 2009 and it was great.
  • The main SGI SP ramp allows up to 24' boats, but you can't get out of the bay at low tide.
  • Want to take boat to St George Island SP, curious would a 19ft center console be too big for Ochlockonee river, some ramps and water are better suited for a smaller boat. Thanks want to start planning different trips with camper and boat.
  • Thanks for correcting my spelling. At least I was close enough so you knew where I was talking about. We have big gators and white squirrels here, but no bears, and I can live with that! You didn't mention the Red Cockaded woodpeckers.

We've camped at Ochlockonee SP several times. I actually like it better than SGI, but the other 3 folks I go with want to be closer to the beach. Don't let your Schnoodle in the river or leave it tied out unattended; there are big gators there that will get them. Also, you might get lucky and see a black bear there or the white squirrels who live about 1/2 down river.

  • We've been there twice, from Christmas through New Year. Once, we towed the boat all the way there, and never put it in the water. Fog was so bad,the oystermen weren't even out. The next time, the weather was beautiful, and we would have used the boat. This year, we're going to Ochcolocnee (I think that's spelled right)State Park, a few miles down the coast.
  • You gotta Try "Boss Oyster" if you haven't yet when you are back there Brad
