FWIW, I do run a 2 micron filter but it has only been on it for the last 35K or so.
They told me the had just done the same work on an 04 5.9 that only had 70K on it. He said letting it sit for long periods of time seem to hasten these problem although they don't know why. Mine often sits during the winter for several weeks and I have to make a ton of very short trips with it where it doesn't get a chance to warm up.
I think some of it is just luck.
These engine last the longest when they are used a lot and used hard.
I'm looking forward to pulling the trailer today and checking mileage.
