I bet the bed is attached to the frame with eight bolts going through sheet metal. Very common for one or more to be ripped out from the normal twisting of the frame. My preference is for the tie-down points to be attached to the frame, and not the bed.
The Ford has several braces underneath for a 5th wheel hitch. When I add the reinforcement plates I plan to try and tie in to those. The Dodge has factory tie downs that are on the frame in front of the bed. That's how the previous owner used it for years as he had a '95 Ram. My '01 is the same bed design. There are also two braces that go into the hitch receiver underneath. On the Dodge, it will be tied directly into the frame of the truck. Unlike a normal pickup, mine is a commercial chassis and has a much heavier frame. I think the 1500 pound camper will also make it ride better.
