Huntingdog and GMW Photos,
I have read through all the tires threads, read all the "experts" columns and a lot of manufacture data. I find it hard to believe that a trailer tire can't be built to go the same 60,000 miles my LT truck tires go. How often do the tires get replaced on a semi trailer? You can bet it is not 12,000 miles! If folks think their tiny TT, or fifth wheel tire are subject to more or different loads than a loaded semi truck trailer tire, the ones that are going 75-80 on the interstate, in the summer heat, with 40,000 pounds of cargo they need to think again. Tire companies CAN build trailer tires that will last just as long but they make more money selling cheap failure prone tires. No one can tell me that the marketing departments didn't dream up the "trailer tire"...
My question to you two is this: How many miles do you get on your LT replacements?
My TT has brand new tires so I think I can get at least one year out of them. I will not speed, I will keep them inflated to max, I will test the temp every time I stop, I will keep them covered and will try to avoid road hazards.
When I replace them it will be with LT tires properly chosen for my TT weight.
Mark,
In my case, even though I pull the trailers quite a bit, the LT still age out before wearing the tread away. My camper has Kumho 857's on it that I put on two years ago. They now have about 20K miles, and still have about 80% of their original tread depth.
One of the horse trailers ( the one that gets pulled most often, and also on the longest trips, we just replaced the LT's on it because the tires were coming up on nine years old. They still had a lot of tread, but age was getting out there, and they had some ( not real bad ) weather cracking. They are not covered, so the sun beats on them, no doubt did some harm to them, but still, at that age, it was time. Not sure how many miles were on them, but a guess would be maybe 40K or little more. Those were Firestone Transforce, replaced with same. Also just pulled a set a couple years ago, of Uniroyal Laredos off the other horse trailer. They were more than ten years old, no idea how many miles ( bought the trailer used ). They also still had tread but were weather cracked and old.
Hope this helps. gmw
ps, the Kumho's are 14" load range D and the horse trailers both are 16" load range E
My equipment trailer, the tires will almost certainly age out first. Even though it hauls "heavy" a lot of the time, it never goes very far, so mileage will be low on it. I bought the trailer three years ago, and it probably only has three thousand miles or so on it. It's just used mostly between the farm and the horse barn, which is only 20 miles.
