squeal at 2200 rpm

just finished a 7690 mile 11 state trip with our 5th wheel. Total weight around 18K. My cummins engine (5.9) with 48re transmission started making a squeal when it down shifted pulling a mountain. RPM's would rise to about 2200 and boost to 25 psi. Prior to leaving on the trip I asked the service manager about a strange sound I was having at 2200 rpm and he said it was nothing to be concerned with. At that point it was a tap tap tap about like an old 54 ford lifter, very different from the normal diesel clatter. Now it is a sound about like a throw out bearing going bad in the old 54. while running down the road in overdrive cruising it just hums along like normal. Only when it hits 2200 RPM do I hear it until it passes 2500 rpm at which time it quits and I don't hear it.
Not being a mechanic I would like to have some thought when I take it in to the shop. I will not be able to duplicate the sound and I doubt it would create a code so diagnosis will be by guess.
Has anyone had this issue and if so what were the end results?

A high pitched squeal could be a boost leak at one of the rubber boots on the intake plumbing.

Yeah my '03 Dodge/Cummins developed a squeal as boost increased . Found a loose clamp on the intercooler.
  • Exhaust leak. The tap tap tap has now turned into a gasket squeal. Like putting a stretched peice of plastic between your lips and blowing on it.

Does boost drop when the noise stops at 2500 rpm?
  • I vote for the idler or tensioner pulley, mine just started doing it at idle but seems to go away when it warms up.
A common wear item and most guys change them with the belt.
Just had a post on Turbodieselregistry about changing it.
  • Has it had the "Alternator Override Pulley" TSB done? When the engine shifts and has a rapid RPM change, it causes the belt to chirp/squeal, and in extreme cases, come off.

  • 180000 miles. I ruled out the belt due to the fact it is less than a year old, good and tight and in good condition, and the truck is quite consistent about the squeal starting at 2200 rpm and stopping at 2500 rpm, or close. I should mention that it does have an engine exhaust brake on it but it doesn't seem to make any difference if it is on or off. I just took it up a long hill by our house and tried to get some noise but couldn't. Only with the 5th wheel on the back. If it were belt/pulley issues it shouldn't care the load, only the rpms.

Edit. I am thinking along the lines of transmission , torque converter or exhaust. With the rpms up to 2200 and the boost up to 25 I can get a squeal but that's hard to do on these mountain roads around us.

Could it be a fan belt or a tension pulley or the alternator or waterpump or ??

That's the only things that come to mind when you say it's a "squeal" sound??

    X2

How many miles on that 2005 5.9L?
