SRW 4X4, Camper, 19.5's in the Snow?

Heading out Thursday with 3-6" of snow in the forecast. We don't get much snow around here and have never driven my camper with 19.5's in the snow. What should I expect? I'll bring chains, just curios what to expect? These pizza cutters help or hinder? They're open shoulder M/S.
  • No, western OR and WA have trouble when the rain stops falling. Most of the people cannot handle the glare of non-overcast skies.

We have the same problem in Western Oregon/Washington when the rains start falling. Go figure.

Narrow "pizza cutter" tires are good to a point. Too narrow can be a hindrance also, I had studded 235's once, never again. They were terrible compared to a decent common 265 width tire. Your 245's should be fine with the weight of a camper helping traction in ordinary snow, just remember the increased stopping distance and go slower on corners to prevent pushing.

    LOL!!
I remember being in Anchorage one year for work, when the first snow of the season was forecast. Made the comment to a local that at least I didn't need to worry about "The other Drivers" up here. He just laughed and said, "They forget how to drive over the summer"!!!!

That's so true! Same thing in Fairbanks every fall. We figured it was mostly due to the new military families who moved up and had little experience with winter driving.

  • My previous 245/70R19.5 tires on my SRW and current 225/70R19.5 on my DRW do well on snow and ice with the camper loaded. They do poorly where you need flotation like deep snow, mud or sand.

  • I do not have 19.5's but the weight of the camper and 4WD does wonders in snow.

I have snow rated tires and the the weight of the TC alone even in 2WD will get me through the nastiest of stuff. Just maintain distance in front of the next vehicle and be aware & careful and I think you should do fine.

Not sure how wide your tires are. Does the inference "pizza cutters" mean they are narrow? Generally, narrow tires do better in snow compared to wide tread... the weight is more concentrated in that respect downward for better traction.
  • Mine were fine on my SRW either with the camper or without. I did sipe mine and they were Hankook DH-01s in 245 size.
