Suburban 2500 6.0 tow 10,000 lbs?

I am looking for some ideas on how to tow my 25' TH with UTV inside that weighs 10,000 lbs. Currently I have a 09 Silverado 2500HD that easily tows it but Since I have another child it's overkill as a daily driver, and I only tow a few times a year.

I would like to sell it to buy an SUV for the family like a 08 Suburban 2500 6.0.
Realistically I only tow my trailer to Glamis about 5 times a year and it's 200 miles round trip.
If I get the Burb and install airbags would I be ok to tow since it's not very far and there's not many hills along the way?
I figure I'd be about 500-800lbs over maximum towing capasity.
  • My wife loves to tote around in our k2500. It's not a daily driver but she has no issues wheeling it. Center buckets wth rear bench out.

    2004 4l80e and 3.73 tow rating: 7,600lbs.
  • Thanks for the replies. Lots of great info that i figured but just wanted to make sure. Looks like i have to convince wifey to upgrade her vehicle instead of me. She wont drive a full size SUV but wants the 3 rows and cargo room. But i know once she test drives a few shell see all the cool updated gadgets and change her mind ;)

Assuming you have the 6.0 in your truck now, pretty much would the same on power, 08 and an 09 should have the same transmission, which I think is 6 speed?

The issue is loading....max tow capacity with the burb (like many other vehicles) assume only the driver in the truck. Add passengers plus gear in the back and that capacity goes down accordingly.

The new burbs have an integrated hitch receiver that can't be changed out and is limited to 1000 lbs tongue weight. Add the TW of the trailer and payload of the burb and you will be way over GVWR, along with tow rating, GCWR, and RAWR.

Better option would be to trade for a 2500 or better yet 3500 crew cab or Ram mega-cab for more interior space, and still tow the trailer OK. I think you're asking too much from the 2500 burb.
  • I agree that the TW is really the issue and you already have a capable vehicle. No need to reinvent the wheel.
  • No way. If you are actually at 10k loaded, that will be 1200-1500 pounds of TW. This is the problem with the 07+ GM (and all competitors for that matter which are even lower):

200 miles round trip? Take two vehicles. That's relatively cheap fuel for the second vehicle.
  • The 07-14 Suburbans are limited in their hitch weight to 1000 lbs. The 2500 with the 6sp is much better than the 2500 with 4 sp. If your HD has the 3.73, the power would be the same.
  • Different year/model: I towed a 9,500 # GVWR TT with a 2003 (?) 2WD 2500 Suburban with the 6.0. I even upgraded the axle to 4.1 (IIRC).

I weighed the TT a couple of times and found out that when loaded, it was 8800 - 9200.

I did not enjoy the towing experience simply from the aspect of how hard the 6.0 had to work. Stopped OK, with the Dual-Cam it towed OK, never felt out of control......except it would just really struggle on anything but the slightest grades. Great rig for driving from Ewe-Stun to Florida. Not a good rig for accelerating, going West, or for gas mileage.
  • I tow a 20 ft titan trailer from fullerton to glamis atleast 6 times a year trailer is prob about 7000-7200 loaded. Also load the truck with 2 kids quads, fuel and whatever else i can fit.Truck is a 2500hd 4x4 ex cab 6.0 gasser

It does fine i usually keep it at 60 and under i can do 65 after that its more work more like more fuel!If i had to tow a 10k trailer im sure it can be done maybe just a lil slower but no major hills to climb just a couple of small ones.Headwinds coming backl thru whitewater can slow me down quickly though to 35-40 no winds im 55 up the hill.
  • You need to understand that tow rating is based on a number of things, not just the suspension.
The list includes (but is not limited to) brakes, engine cooling, transmission strength, transmission cooling, strength of frame, etc, etc, etc.

It is really difficult (and expensive) to upgrade the tow rating of a vehicle.

Personally I have an F350 that only moves when I need to move something heavy, the rest of the time I drive a (cheap to operate) small car.
