Suburban Water Heater help

I have what appears to be an older version of the SW6DE. When I got the trailer the anode rod was out of its hole and laying there. My issue to even see if the heater works is the threads for the anode rod are rusted and covered with buildup. I have been working on cleaning them but I am wondering if that part is replaceable. The threads on the rod are also rusty so ordering a new one but not sure if I can get it screwed in. It is going to be difficult with the condition of the threads in the hole.

I don't even know how the rod was even in the hole because the buildup was so much that you couldn't see most of the threads. I think perhaps the buildup underneath is due to excessive thread tape.
  • Use the proper socket for removal, chase the treads with a tap before replacing with a new anode rod. Use Teflon tape on new treads.

The anode rod is intentionally sacrificial and as such is replaceable but the tank being a Suburban porcelain coated steel tank is not (unlike an aluminum Atwood tank which is replaceable) so you really want to recover those tank threads if you can, otherwise you'll be buying an entirely new water heater. :(
  • Use a pipe nipple and some CLR to clean the threads in the water heater. Rinse and install the anode rod.

I ordered one on Amazon since I am sure it is cheaper but that is the easy part. My concern is the steal insert that the rod screws into. It does not look replaceable and it is very rusty. I think I will eventually be able to clean the threads enough to screw the rod.
