Switching from lug bolts to studs and lug nuts

I have a '76 Prowler travel trailer that has lug bolts to hold the wheels on. It's a bit of a pain to get the wheel lined up and then get the bolt started. The hub is integrated into the drum. I'm not sure how common this setup is.

Has anyone put studs into the drum and then used lug nuts?

  • They are right hand thread all the way around. The pattern is 5x4.5". The hole in the wheel is slightly bigger than the hub, not as big as the Fayette style.
  • before anything, make sure both sides are R handed threads… not all ale… some have L handed threads on one side and R handed threads on the other…

I am guessing you have the Dexter Star wheels or the Fayette style wheels with the large center whole…

There's your solution, or just cut the heads off two proper sized bolts. Use them as guides to line up your three (or more) bolts, then pull them for the last two bolts. We used to do that for manifolds, pans, heads, rears and other units that were had to start the first bolts.
  • I have only ever had one vehicle that had stud bolts rather then studs and nuts..... it was a 1996 Audi A4.

I would love ALL my vehicles, trailers included, to have stud bolts rather then studs and nuts (exactly the opposite of what you're planning) I found them to be more exact when mounting, cleaner threads, less corrosion, easier to handle with gloves, no cracking like the lug nuts often do, less rust... all around better.
  • You have to change the hub to get a Class 4 fit (drive the bolt in with a hammer)The old one is threaded so it wont hold lug bolts properly for safety reasons. Get the mfg and number off the axle, if it is a Dexter, email Dexter and ask them. They will tell you if you can do it.
  • Just an assumption that you would have to replace the drum & hub & maybe the entire axle assembly..... I would hot think there would be any easy / safe way to just add studs. I have had older cars that way & a utility trailer.
