TC insurance and auto policies...

My camper is insured on my auto policy but lately, I've been wondering about one, limits and two, is it insured off the truck (as in storage) so I called my agent and found out the deductibles are the same on the camper as my truck ($1000.00 ded) and it's not insured in storage.

Consequently, I was curious as to what insurance (company) would be better to insure the unit both on truck and off truck. Did a site search and came up with nothing.

I'd like to get separate coverage in addition to my normal policy to cover things like storm damage and camper damage with a smaller deductible.

I carry Nationwide Insurance on my 4 motorcycles as an entirely separate policy (my auto-farm insurer don't insure motorcycles). Is Nationwide a viable carrier for the TC?

Any suggestions?

  • I have a complete and separate TC policy to cover anything and everything/ on or off truck/ at home or in the field. $17,000 total loss coverage for $250 per year.

  • When I had insurance on an RV, it was Explorer RV. They covered when ever it was covered by the truck's insurance. I did file a claim with them for damage from a blow out and had great service with quick settlement. This was back in 2008 so things may have changed, but they would be my first stop if I was shopping again.

When you talk to the insurance company, you also need to be specific about the type of insurance coverage. If you just ask, is this covered by the truck, their answer will be "yes". However, if you ask, is this covered by the truck's comprehensive policy, the answer may be "no, only liability". And as you have found out, it isn't covered when off the truck in either campgrounds or storage.
  • I have Nationwide on both truck and truck camper. They are separate policies. I carry a $250 deductible on each. I have yet to find a more reasonable rate and believe me I've compared. I also have Nationwide's Roadside Assistance which has proven to be better than my former Good Sam and Coachnet for less than one third the price.
Unfortunately, I needed to submit a claim on my former truck camper when it almost burnt to the ground due to Host's shoddy workmanship. Nationwide stepped up to the plate and handled everything without any problems.
I have been very happy with their service and prices.
