I guess it depends on your view. True that the sticker is sometimes less and the spring pack is different. The frame is the same for the pickup type. There are other significant differences for most years. Assuming you get one with 19.5s, the G rated tires are rated more, and the rear axle is generally rated higher as well with bigger, better brakes and generally a much tighter turn radius.
My F450 has a 14500 GVWR. That leaves 5300 or so via the sticker. The axle is rated way higher than the F350 of the same years and again, the tires/wheels are, too. F350 DRWs similarly equipped had barely higher sticker values unless they were gasoline.
You're both absolutely correct -- depending on the year. I did a TON of research before plopping down coin on an F450.
The only VISIBLE difference-- 2008-2010 and 2015+ have 19.5 tires. All others have 17".
Here's what that means--
19.5 tires come with the Dana 110 rear end, that alone is rated by Dana @ 14,000lbs.
F450's with 17" tires are nothing more than a re-geared F350 with a Dana 80 - a 10,000lb rear end re-geared from 4.10 to 4.88 for better towing, nothing more.
19.5 tires also have have much larger brakes front and rear. As far as brake size, the difference is pretty substantial. We're talking over an inch larger front and rear.

The fact that the door sticker on 19.5 F450's still reads the same or less than an F350 is because over a certain number, I think it's 16k, it gets classified as commercial, so the lawyers said "Make it say less".
But the "Seat 'o'the Pants Meter" difference in hauling a heavy TC is night and day. I have the stock sway bars, stock shocks, and it is a dream to drive compared to my F350DRW with every suspension mod you could do to an F350.
