Television Mount

Hi all,
We have a Jayco 184 BH trailer. I am wondering if the wall near the ant. cable output would support the mount that Camping world sells that allows you to move the mount. It comes with two mounts. I was thinking of mounting both mounts on opposite sides(one inside and one outside) sandwich them together using the stud work of the wall. Does anyone know what that studwork is? That would allow us to move it outside under our awning. Thanks in advance for your help!
  • A problem with Molly bolts... they don't play very nice with Styrofoam filled walls.

Actually I used screws instead haha

I used to use these spring wing thingies to mount things to thin walls but the problem here is if you ever unscrew it for whatever reason the spring wing nut drops down behind the wall...

Then they came out with the MOLLY BOLTs. and these are great for this application... With the molly bolt you drill a smal hole to slip this in place and then when you tighten down on the screw it spreads out behind the wall. Then you can remove the screw if you like and it stays in place... Doesn't drop down behind the wall like the spring wing bolt did...

Here is a pictorial on how the MOLLY BOLT works..

  • As Roy B indicated, use a back-board and then screw the mount to the backboard.

In my previous camper, this was an interior wall. The other side was the bathroom. I used Liquid Nails and a bazillion fine finishing nails with an air gun to mount the board. I did not go through the wall. There were only a couple spots where I hit an actual stud. We removed the television when in transit, thus the reason for the flat mount with the easy lift-off hooks:

My current trailer had a specific spot for the television mount. We took this one off when we sold the trailer and I put it in the bedroom of our Outback which had a designated place for it. We still remove the television from mount when traveling. Lay it on the bed. No problem. We can take it outside that way too.

You will need to contact JAYCO using your VIN number and they should send you some BUILD PDF files to show where the studs are located. JAYCO has sent me such drawings in the past upon receipt of the request to my email address.

Most of the trailers have the wall marked with a label showing it has a backboard installed inside the thin wall to support the HDTV mounts... My trailer had one such label in the main room and also in the bed room wall.

You can usually find the small studs by thumping on the trailer thin walls. Some studs may be wood but I think most of them are using small light aluminum extrusions now...

Otherwise it would be wise to just mount an one-inch thick backboard first using what is called MOLLY BOLTs across the wall to screw your HDTV mounts into using regular wood screws.

Would look something like these google image photos...

The backboard spreads out all of the weight involved so you won't have the screws being pulled out of the thin walls...
