That was the way it WAS........
Seems 'new law' changed that. No inspection/no registration
HB 2305 was passed during the 83rd legislative session. This bill eliminated the inspection sticker resulting in a single-sticker system and makes vehicle registration dependent on obtaining a passing vehicle inspection.
Annual trip to TX now required for inspection in order to renew registration???? vs just getting it within 10 days of returning to state (which many TX folks didn't do for years)
We have been assured by Escapees that our Polk County registration will be renewed if we certify we are out of state. And I've talked to the county vehicle registration office - which says the same thing.

Out of State Motorists
If your vehicle is out of state and you are unable to complete a Texas vehicle inspection in order to renew your registration, you will be able to self-certify that the vehicle is out of state and will be permitted to register. The self-certification process will be limited to:
•Active duty military
•Full-time students
•Seasonal Texans, RV’ers
•Apportioned vehicles
•Elected Congressional officials

One change - the inspection must be done within three days for returning to my 'home', 'duty station' or 'destination'.

The big thing about the one sticker and inspection process is that the record a police office accesses when they look my registration will have the date of my last inspection noted on the vehicle record. They will be able to scan your license plate with their optical systems - it will flash up both an out of date registration, and/ or an out of date inspection.
The computer record, not the actual sticker on the vehicle, will be the official record of compliance with registration requirements.
