I learned decades ago that an automatic transmission is better for towing. It absorbs the shock loads better than a manual transmission. I have put 170,000 miles on all of my trucks and while those with manual transmissions needed clutches and pressure plates replaced, those with automatic transmissions only needed the fluid changed at 100K miles.
With the new trucks there are 6 and 8 speed transmissions that provide better towing performance and better fuel economy. Tractors are still mostly using manual transmissions but the fleet operators are buying new trucks with the automatic transmissions to improve fuel economy for their new rigs.
