what advantage does this give you? does it prevent the delay and surging you might get otherwise?
The reaction time for the torque converter is slow and not exactly predictable/feelable. Plus, when the obstacle is overcome, the vehicle wants to surge. By using the brakes, you have a quicker reaction time, better control and complete control.
