My 2¢ worth. Real trucks don't shift themselves.
Today, "real" trucks do. And they come with factory exhaust brakes, integrated trailer controllers, 6 speed auto transmissions with the ability to lock out any gear, etc.
And they don't need crazy low gears to tow huge loads. With 6 gears and a 1st gear that revs out at 25mph it's just not necessary. My 2014 Ram 3500 SRW with 3.42 gears is rated for 17,000# towing and almost 4000# payload and gets well over 20mpg on the highway empty. Even with that evil DEF stuff. And it's comfortable with my 4000# Lance camper at 80mph.
Face it. Todays trucks are so much better than trucks of the early 2000's it's not even a fair comparison. If you haven't spent time driving one either carrying or towing a load you have no idea how much better they are.
