There is over weight and there is over weight

With all the discussions of SRW vs DRW, wether or not it is ok to be over the GVWR or the GAWR, I though it might be fun to note that truckers have some of the same issues. :)

Overweight semi truck
  • LOL! I guess if you're going to overload, might as well do it spectacularly! Holy cow - glad I wasn't on the road with that guy.
  • Interesting, the way the story describes the citations issued really reinforces the description of how commercial weights are enforced as told in the Tow Vehicle forum sticky on weight limits.
  • After 30+ years jamming gears every day, I prefer an automatic now. Let the box do the shifting....lol

He must have had to do a bunch of shifting to get going! Once rode with neighbor that had his own log trucks, that day he was running "Mule Train" which is a long log setup with a short log pup behind it 105,000# GVWR to get through an intersection I think he shifted about eight times!
I am suprised that his driveline didn't look like pretzel!
  • lets see, was grossing 165 thousand and change. No big deal. For years I ran down the road grossing 163 and change legally (and sometimes a bit more (not legally).

Biggest load I ever pulled was 240,000 pounds on the deck, 6 40K steel coils, all in a row.

All with Cats, Cummins don't come close to the pulling power.

Was on an 11 axle unit, 3 on the tractor, 8 on the trailer. 4 lift axles for turning, 2 in the front and 2 in the back. Always a 3406 with either a 13 speed or an 18 speed Roadranger.

Thats everyday up here in Michigan, parts of Ohio and Indiana.

Probably a Cat of the 3406 variety. Might have had a Cummins for a starter motor....:S
  • Come on, what's the big deal?? Only 85,900 lb. axle group overload.
