This is gonna get moved

I don't go to the tech site but here is my question before it gets moved.

I boondock and use Natl Forest CG's 98% of the time. My TomTom which is about eight years old is time for a trip to the shelf. I like some features but it never showed me CG's and found it was difficult to find Natl Parks. In fact it doesn't even get me to my house.
I need a new GPS that will get me to these CG's. One that is easy to use as I'm not very tech savy.

  • Have you upgraded your Tom Tom. At least once a year my wife takes ours, connects it to the internet and gets the updated maps and latest new information. We've been doing this for some ... 10 years now. We've never had problems with our Tom Tom. It might takes us to a road that's been flooded (which actually happened), it might takes 50 miles out of our way, which it has, but it always gets us there... more important ... it always gets us back home. I never depend 100% on our Tom Tom though. We ALWAYS carry a Road Atlas with us, and always carry one of those detailed maps with all the country roads for the state of Indiana. Between that and our Iphones with Google Maps, we compare routes and then make the best choice. 95% of the time, Tom Tom is right on target.

Do the on-line updates and you'll get a lot more life out of your Tom Tom.

This probably won't be moved, considering there are already 2 fuel price threads, a TPMS thread, and how to make toast.

    LMAO!

I go through the whole forums list when I first get up in the morning and then I sit on the NEWEST TOPICS the rest of the day. This list the posts from all the forums subjects as they get posted. I bet alot of other members do the same thing...

Why not post in Technology in the first place?

Because most folks that post there don't boondock is the main reason.
    :B Sadly, this is true.

Most there are too busy twirling their Solar tracking contraptions to eek out every possible Watt as the Sun Apogees across the sky.

When, that is if, you upgrade to a new GPS device purchase one that you are able to upgrade or have lifetime map updates. Look for ones that are designed more for the off the beaten path routing. My GPS is capable of moving from the dash of my truck, to the console of my Adventure Motorcycle and then to the handlebars of my CRF450X Dirt Bike, with off road and street modes (Garmin Navigator IV).

You might just go "old school" and use links like this one; Clicky and just do some checking before you leave home. Photo copy the satellite views and print out the descriptions. By your own admission you don’t have a Smart Phone or a workable GPS, so you need to work with what you have, or, in a word, what you don’t have.

Have fun! The best adventures are often discovered by accident.
