Tire recommendations, TV F150

I'm interested in getting that "soft" feeling reduced or eliminated from the back end of my F150. So I'm sure that someone else has gone down this road and would love to hear what you have done and how well it worked. I have the OEM Wranglers on it and have never really liked them so I would be happy to replace them with a good towing tire. I would not mind losing that passenger tire ride for a great towing ride.

  • Thanks everyone for the input.

With regard to the TPMS, my service guy is looking into it. He felt that it would be looking for a minimum pressure and if you exceed that pressure you should be okay. He's going to see if the computer inputs for the TPMS can be adjusted or how they would respond. He also said some 18" spares in the ford line can have a 17" wheel with a taller tire under the bed.
  • I have always been a fan of inflating based upon load.... Until Ford decided that the TPMS must alarm 5-6 psi below the manufacturer inflation (based upon fully loaded truck). 58psi is as low as I can go without the aggravating TPMS going off.

I have LRD's on my F150, ditching the P rated tires, and LRE's on the F250. I personally like the stiffer ride, and no squishy side to side movement.
BFG All Terrain on the F150 : Aggressive tread, a little noisey but unstoppable
BFG Rugged Terrain (Rough Terrain?) on F250 : Less aggressive, quieter but still great traction.
    YMMV...

IMO the secret with the LR "E" tires is you have to really pay attention to the recommended load inflation tables. Not towing a typical SRW truck based TV will only need around 45psi and just going up 10psi above the recommended pressure can severely degrade ride quality.

  • I had the stock Mitchelin on my previous F150 and they were a great tire for wear and traction.
I read some reviews about them and they seem like a good choice.

    The TT is 8,200
    TT tire pressure is 65
I will get back to you on the axel loads, I'm going to a scale soon.
As I said I'm not concerned about the ride, it's crazy soft now even when the truck is empty.

  • I towed about 8K with the stock Wranglers on mine with experience similar to rbpru. I only got about 32K miles out of them before needing replacement. I've had good success with Michelin tires on our Camry, so planned on replacing with the P-rated LTS M/S2, but the local tire store didn't have them in stock. They did have the E rated version and I decided to try them since I tow a fair amount. When aired up to 45, they are noticeably stiffer than the Wranglers were, but at 40, they aren't much rougher riding. I'm pleased with the choice so far.
  • What weight TT?
    What TV tire pressure?
How heavy are your axel loads?
What type of ride do you expect?

I have towed my 6000 lb. TT with my F-150 4x4 and stock ā€œPā€ rated Wranglers over 10k miles in the last two years with no problems. I do boost the tire pressure to 40 psi for towing.

My wife thinks that the no load ride is already a bit too stiff; the last thing I need is a buckboard ride from some gonzo tires.
