To get slide outs or not?

I had fallen in love with the slide outs giving a sense of spaciousness and just had to have it, especially to have the floor space for my rebounder, but after seeing a few articles online about the problems that slides cause, like leaks, mold, critters, mechanical issues, etc., that it was a major source of problems in an RV., I am now hesitant to get a TT with a slide out.

What have the people on this forum experienced regarding slide outs?

  • Slide-outs for the most part are no longer a liability. Any opening into the box has the potential for leaking be it a slideout, skylight or window. Nevertheless slideouts are a great way to get more space. They have been perfected and allow for a variety of floorplans.
Personally I would not buy a unit with out a slide. My current unit has 5.
Be sure to consider how accessible the unit is with the slide closed. My unit is enormous when the slides are out and fairly accessible when they are in, although I do happen to open a slide to access the fridge, which could be a deal breaker for someone. I consider it a issue I can live with to enjoy the added space.
The trend has been to add more slides vs. building units without slides.

It was important to us too. Our TT has the slideout where everything is usable with the slide in. Everything can be reached. We can walk from one end to the other. When we spend the night in a WM or TS lot, we don't extend it.
  • Our TT has a slideout and we've had no problems with it leaking, sticking... nothing. And it sure makes a difference in the added space inside.
  • I have had multiple slides with no problems, like anything a bit of maintenance will prevent most problems. However I also have slider toppers on my slides which I think really do help alot.
  • I'm pretty happy with my non-slideout Passport 238ML. A lot of trailers with slides require you to extend them to get to certain parts of the trailer like the bathroom. Getting to the bathroom is an important thing to me while traveling, otherwise why have it? If I was living in a trailer full time or didn't move the trailer a lot I would be ok with a cramped interior with the slideouts in, but in our situation most of our camping is accompanied by trips of over 100 miles and the ability to use the trailer bathroom and kitchen while in a narrow pullout on a road or in a small parking lot is important to us. On a rainy afternoon I'd appreciate a little more space, but for us having a non-slideout trailer meets our needs well.

If you don't get a slide you will be trading in soon. You have lots of questions, the search feature if your friend.

Thanks for the link!! I will try the search function next time, too!

After reading that thread, my mind is much more at ease!! I do love those slides!! However, I have yet to see a bedroom slide... that would be awesome, as all that I have seen are the BRs that you have to squeeze through the wall and the bed to sleep.
  • Frankly, I wouldn't have a TT without a slide-out!

They are just fine. Like anything, there are problems w/ them as there are problems with propane regulators/black tank blades/windows/ etc etc etc.

No reason to be discouraged by having a slide-out in my opinion.

  • If you just do some part-time camping you may be fine with no slides.

The more time you spend in your camper the more necessary those slide-outs are.
