You should absolutely lube the ball.
Well said Barney, you took the words right out of my mouth. So, unlike the dealer, I'll just keep mine shut....:)
X 3, lube what you want to last
X4 to infinity.
Yes, I grease my ball.
I pull a #5,500+ trailer full time and have pulled trailers since I worked ranching, as a kid. The first time you have to replace a receiver after it has worn out, you will have wished you had just greased your ball.
Just like air filters, it depends on the use and environment on how often you change them. Just like air filters, if you are driving in the desert, dusty environment, dirt roads and or dipping them in water, down boat ramps, you need to maintain your ball more often, including replacing them. I replace my ball every year and I always find galling on the surface of the ball.
I use to use a tennis ball cover, but found a Wal-Mart bag or zip lock faster. Or two handi wipes, cleans the grease off the ball really well. You should be cleaning the grease off the ball as well, as it begins accumulating metal shavings, dirt and debris in the grease.
The debate will continue, as we all have a friend of a friend of a friend that had 40 years of great service without doing this or doing that, but when you check into it, they often times never pulled that trailer outside of their home state and only twice a month between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
