In a nutshell, gas is cheaper than diesel, gas engines are cheaper to maintain, and with new 6 and 8 speed transmissions their towing capabilities are greatly improved. A lot of it depends on your personal situation....towing over 12,000 lbs, or towing regularly at elevation where the turbo diesel doesn't suffer power loss, or fulltiming vs vacationing are all reasons to consider a diesel.
Which one is better for you depends on the job you are asking it to do.
Gas may be slightly cheaper than diesel in some areas but not 20%, which is easily how much better mileage you will get towing with a diesel.
I believe most that are re-considering gas are those that have figured they don't really need the pulling power or have dealt with or heard of all the emissions issues the newer trucks are having these days.
