They truly are a great product - simple and inexpensive. We unload our camper for the winter and I pull the SLs off when we're not loaded. I just installed them again in anticipation of loading this weekend.
As you say, driving with them engaged and the truck not loaded is an experience. It's like driving an old farm truck from the 50s again - all that's missing is the Armstrong steering!
