Tow Vehicle

I have a 2500 HD Gas. I thinking abouting getting a diesel. With my truck now I am getting about 10 mpg pulling and about 13 miles in the city limits. I pay approximately $100.00 to fuel the truck. Is it worth the money to get the diesel or should I just stick with the gaser?

  • Cheapest truck you will ever have is the one you drive now. Changing to gain few bucks at fill up usually means spend thousands for a new ride . Unless your truck is rough??

Buy a diesel because you want or need one. Buying one to save a few mpg's is false economy. If you buy a new or newer truck that requires DPF and DEF just be aware that you have to budget the cost of DEF and the eventual replacement of the DPF can.

Avoid the 6.4 at all costs.
  • It is unlikely that switching to a diesel truck will provide a financial benefit. That doesn't mean that a diesel engine doesn't have qualities that many prefer over a gas truck. If you want a diesel and can afford it then get one. But don't fool yourself into thinking it is a better financial decision.

I would expect 2-3 mpg better from a diesel truck than a gas truck.
  • If you need to replace your truck for other reasons, spending a few grand extra for diesel could make sense. But trading just for mpg's rarely pays off.
  • It all depends on how many miles you will drive. Your fillups will cost more with a diesel, but of course you will drive more miles between them. Just remember, "mpg" and "fuel economy" are not the same thing. I always tell people that if they like the sound and feel of a diesel better, then by all means buy one. If they run lots of miles towing heavy, go diesel. Beyond that you have to crunch the numbers to see if it's worth it to you. I just sold a truck that I used in landscaping to haul heavy and tow light, low in-town mileage. It was gas, and I never regretted buying a gas truck. As they say, your mileage may vary.....

Those are pretty good numbers for a gas 2500, not likely see a huge improvement in mileage, you either tow light or slow with that towing number.
If the trailer is larger the diesel might make sense, but other wise I agree with OpenRangePullen_Ford .

    Thanks :)

  • What year is the truck?, what do you pull with the truck?, Might be cheaper getting a secondary car like a sub compact, Chevy Sonic?
