Towing with a lifted truck?

Hello, first post here.

Anyway, as I'm sure a lot of new people do, I have a ton of questions. However, I'll start with this one.

I have a 2008 Ram 1500, 5.7L, it's lifted with 35" tires. Is that okay to tow a say, 24'-27' toy hauler with? Weight on the toy hauler unknown, we're still researching and looking at them.
When I bought this truck last year I didn't plan on getting a bumper pull. We both started liking the idea of a bumper pull just a couple months ago, so I'm trying to figure out what my truck can tow, safely.
I don't know the gear ratio on my truck, I'm going to figure that out. It does have a tow/haul button I can click on the gear shift so I'm guessing (hoping) it has some sort of tow pkg.
I've never hauled anything this size so suggestions and comments are welcome.

Thanks

  • Gebrown, welcome to da forum...

first your going to get some flak towing with a lifted truck, then towing a "toy hauler" with a 1/2 ton truck, the forum weight police are gonna be all over you!

second, I pulled a travel trailer with my ole 05 3500 quad cab diesel, that had 6" of lift and 37" tires! was very stable contrary to what others (whom most likely never driven on anything larger then OEM size tires) may say about large diameter tires. So, pulling any trailer with your "lifted/over sized tires" will not be an issue, as stated in 2nd post... its going to depend on trailer weight, length and type.
  • I would also make sure you have stabalizer set up like the equalizer hitch or something or that trailer is going to sway and dance behind you like its prom night. The worst thing you can do at this point is not find out the answers to the questions you have and still chance it. Goodluck.
  • You will lose some stability with the over size tires. There will be more flex in the sidewall. You will also need to look into the weight rating of your lift kit. That may be the limiting factor. The payload and gear ratio of the truck will also factor in. You'll need to find the answers to these issues.

The size of the trailer is within reason for your truck. The tongue weight and overall weight of the unit will be a huge factor as to your trucks ability to tow it. Once you know more about your truck you can decide how much you can tow with it.
  • First thing you have to do is find out how much your going to tow. You can't move on until you find that out. For certain you can tow something How much is the most important question.
